No jargon, no upselling — just what we’d tell a friend or a family member if they rang us.
First, take a breath and check the obvious — is a window on the latch, is a housemate five minutes away, is there a spare with a neighbour? If not, stand somewhere safe and well-lit, and call us on 020 7101 3450. Tell us the door type (wood, UPVC, composite, aluminium) and roughly what brand of lock if you can see it — that lets our engineer bring the right tools and, if needed, the right replacement parts in the van so you're not paying for two visits.
Get somewhere safe and call 101 for a crime reference number — your insurance will want it. Don't touch the damaged lock or frame more than you have to; a photo helps. We'll come out, secure the property the same night (board-up if there's smashed glass), and quote you separately for the permanent repair once it's light. Most home insurance policies cover emergency securing under 'trace and access' — we give you a written invoice you can claim against.
For UPVC and composite doors the honest answer is a 3-star anti-snap cylinder — Ultion, Avocet ABS or Brisant. Lock snapping is still the single most common way front doors get attacked in NW London and a proper 3-star cylinder defeats it in seconds. For wooden doors, a BS3621 5-lever mortice deadlock is what your insurance is asking for, ideally paired with a good nightlatch. Don't overspend on 'smart' features you'll never use — spend the money on the physical cylinder first.
It's almost always one of three things: the multi-point gearbox has failed inside the door, the door has dropped so the hooks miss the keeps, or the handle springs have gone and the mechanism can't lift. All three are fixable in a single visit if the engineer arrives with the right parts. If a locksmith tells you the whole door needs replacing for a stiff handle, get a second opinion — nine times out of ten it doesn't.
For a lot of NW London homes, yes — with caveats. A Yale Linus L2 or Ultion Nuki on top of a proper 3-star cylinder gives you keyless entry, guest codes for cleaners and Airbnb, and a log of who came in when. The mistake is buying a smart lock as your only security layer. The Wi-Fi is convenience; the physical anti-snap cylinder underneath is what actually keeps burglars out. We fit both together.
Between tenancies you have two sensible options: a full cylinder change (cheapest, quickest, gives the new tenant fresh keys) or a re-pin of the existing cylinder if it's a recent high-security one. For HMOs and blocks of flats, remember that fire-escape doors need BS8621 thumbturn locks — a standard deadlock on an escape route can invalidate your fire risk assessment. We can master-suite a whole building so you carry one key that opens everything.
Rogue traders quote £49 on the phone and £600 in your hallway. The tells: no company name on the van, no written quote before drilling, cash only, an 0800 number that rings a call centre in another city, and a suspiciously eager offer to 'just drill it, it's the only way'. Real locksmiths pick first, quote everything in writing, take card, and are happy for you to check their insurance and ID before they start.
Don't leave keys visible from the letterbox — letterbox fishing is still common. Fit a letterbox cowl or restrictor if yours is within arm's reach of the latch. Double-lock UPVC doors by lifting the handle and turning the key; a lot of people don't and the door is only on the latch. Trim back the hedge by the front door — burglars want cover. None of this needs a locksmith; it takes ten minutes.
